Divorce is one of the most profound life upheavals anyone can endure. You enter marriage with dreams and aspirations and when life takes an unexpected turn, it can leave you feeling broken, wounded, and judged. The world—and even your own church community—might label you as a “divorced person with a failed marriage,” an identity you’ve been unjustly assigned. Yet, within this turbulent season lies a unique opportunity. Summer, with its long days and warm nights, is the perfect time for you to rediscover your true self. The #1 summer task for Christias healing from divorce is to immerse yourself in self-acceptance, God-acceptance and deepen your personal relationship with Him.
Here’s some suggestions:
First, align yourself with God’s perspective. When you think of yourself, what words come to mind? Broken? Weary? Unworthy? It’s time to replace these labels with affirmations rooted in your faith. The Bible is rich with reminders of your worth. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This summer, make it your mission to internalize these truths. Wake up each morning and speak God’s promises over your life. You are beloved, whole, and full of potential.
Next, dismantle the lies of failure and shame. Society, and unfortunately, even some church communities, can be unkind and unforgiving. Let go of societal definitions and church-fueled judgments. Assert your autonomy over labels and redefine your identity based on God’s love and purpose for you. Acts 3:19 reminds us that true refreshment comes from the Lord’s presence. Meditate on this truth and allow it to wash away any misguided beliefs about your worth.
Community plays a significant role in your healing journey, but not all communities are beneficial. Seek supportive environments, possibly a new church group or friends who reflect Christ’s love and are genuinely interested in your well-being. Being part of a nurturing, affirming circle can make all the difference in rebuilding your self-image. Join a Bible study group or Christian-based book club where the focus is on growth, not judgment.
Take this summer to rekindle old hobbies or discover new ones. God has placed unique talents and interests within you. Nurturing these gifts can be incredibly healing and empowering. Write, paint, run, or engage in any activity that brings joy and fulfillment. Not only does this rekindle your zest for life, but it also reinforces that you are more than your marital status. Your interests, skills, and hobbies are facets of the beautiful mosaic that is you.
Forgiveness, although difficult, is another cornerstone of your healing. This includes forgiving your former spouse, the judgmental voices within your community, and perhaps most crucially, forgiving yourself. Ephesians 4:32 urges us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Accepting that you did your best with what you knew at each moment can be a liberating step towards self-acceptance and healing. We will dive into this subject in deep detail in future podcasts and articles.
Being a Christian also means embracing solitude constructively. Use this summer to spend intentional, quality time with God. Retreat into nature, perhaps with a picnic and a good devotional book. Listen for God’s voice in the rustling leaves, the flowing water, and the chirping birds. Let nature be a sanctuary that nurtures your spirit and restores your soul. This quiet time will allow you to hear God’s gentle assurances of love and purpose without the noise of societal judgment.
Accountability can be incredibly beneficial on this journey. Consider engaging in Christian counseling or partnering with a spiritual mentor or life coach who can offer wisdom, guidance, and encouragement tailored to your journey. Find someone who respects your faith and your individual pace of healing.
Last, envision your future with faith and hope. Craft a vision board that captures your dreams, aspirations, and even the affirmations you’ve embraced this summer. Keep it visible as a daily reminder of your potential and the limitless possibilities ahead. This summer is your time to heal, to restore, and to remember that you are far more than a label. Embrace this season with a heart open to God’s whisper and a spirit willing to rediscover the extraordinary person you are.
